Despite training on a rock climbing wall that’s at least half the height of those at their sports world championships, two Taranaki teenagers are ready to scale their way to success in Russia.
New Plymouth’s Matt Jones and Ariana van Lith, both 16, are preparing for the International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC) Youth World Championships in Moscow in August.
The pair train on the New Plymouth YMCA’s rock wall but said they will be challenged with climbing walls that are much higher at the international competition.
Jones has been to two world championships but this will be van Lith’s first.
Jones will be competing in the bouldering category, which is climbing without a harness.
van Lith competes in the leads category, which focuses on speed and fitness as a harnessed competitor makes their way up the wall.
Both Jones and van Lith have made Givealittle pages to help with funds to get them to Russia.
