A snowboarder who died after colliding with a tree at Monarch Ski area was a 23-year-old member of the U.S. military, Chaffee County Sheriff John Spezze said Sunday.
Witnesses told investigators they saw Collin J. Zak, an Ohio native, slam into the tree at about noon Saturday while snowboarding. Zak was skiing within bounds and was wearing a helmet, Spezze said.
Efforts to revive him were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Spezze said he didn’t know what branch of the military Zak served in.
