A Colorado man was arrested in Fort Bragg recently after a woman accused him of raping her while the pair were camping in bathrooms along the South Coastal Trail, the Fort Bragg Police Department reported.
According to the FBPD, officers responded to the Mendocino Coast District Hospital around 11 p.m. Oct. 10 when it was reported that a woman in the emergency room had been sexually assaulted. The victim, identified only as a 21-year-old Gualala woman, said she had been raped by a man she was camping with.
The victim said she knew the suspect, identified as Vincent Galvan, 32, a transient from Colorado, “intermittently for several months” and had decided to camp with him in the restrooms along the South Coastal Trail in Fort Bragg on Oct. 10. While the pair was inside the restroom, the victim said Galvan assaulted her and she fought him off and escaped.
When officers responded to the trail they found the suspect had locked himself inside the restroom, and they enlisted the help of Public Works employees to gain access to the restroom. The suspect then reportedly disobeyed orders and had to be “forcefully extracted,” receiving “minor injuries” while being placed under arrest.
Galvan was booked into Mendocino County Jail on suspicion of rape by force and false imprisonment. The FBPD notes that “all indications are that this was an isolated incident and our investigation is continuing.”
