Airbnb has released info on its most popular destinations for spring and the results are somewhat surprising. Although spring break is around the corner, users of the home-sharing app are skipping Daytona and Ft. Lauderdale for more exotic locales.
Topping the list in Monterrey, Mexico, which has seen a 678 percent increase in bookings from 2018.
Located in Mexico’s northeast corner, Monterrey doesn’t have the lush beaches of Cancun or Cabo but it does offer world-class hiking and mountain-climbing, historic architecture, and great art, food and culture.
“Authentic experiences are in high demand,” the site says. “Travelers are yearning for local exchanges in less-frequented cultural districts over popular hotspots.”
Another trend for 2019 is travelers looking to help communities bounce back: As Puerto Rico continues to recover from Hurricane Maria, travel to the territory has increased exponentially. San Juan has seen a nearly 400 percent increase in Airbnb bookings from last year and reservations in Carolina, home to gorgeous Isla Verde Beach, have rocketed more than 640 percent.
Other trending locales include Santos, Brazil; Dapa, Philippines; and the Caribbean islands of Guadeloupe and St. Thomas.
