The Quinnipiac River Linear Trail Advisory Committee is planning a short hiking trail behind the Wallingford Senior Center on Washington Street.
Work is expected to begin in winter or spring and will take about three months, said Town Engineer Rob Baltramaitis.
The Senior Center already has an outdoor adventure group that does hiking and canoeing and an indoor fitness center.
“When the trail goes in, I think people will walk (outside),” said Senior Center Executive Director Bill Viola. “They go in groups to some of the trails (already).”
According to Viola, Eversource donated property near the Senior Center many years ago. Some was used for the center’s parking lot and some will now be used for the trail. The trail advisory committee has already done some work to prepare for construction.
Catherine Granucci, co-chair of the trail advisory committee, said the birds and wildlife along the new trail are going to be amazing.
“It’s so unspoiled,” Granucci said. “It’s a look at wildlife that most people in Wallingford have not seen.”
Baltramaitis said the trail will be about a quarter of a mile, with two rest areas complete with benches.
“The goal of this project is to improve pedestrian connectivity from the Senior Center to the Community Lake Park,” Baltramaitis said.
