“One of them looked at his helmet and everyone took a sharp intake of breath. There was a huge hole in it and a rock was still embedded in the helmet; going all the way through and just protruding on the inside.”
A 17 year old skier in New Zealand quite possibly has his helmet to thank for saving his life after taking a tumble down while skiing alone off piste in Shadow Basin at The Remarkables skifield. It was a powder day but coverage in the area he was skiing was light. Otago Daily News reports the boy made it to ski field’s medical center under his own power and thats when he took off his helmet and the puncture with the rock embedded was discovered.
Austin’s dad posted the picture of the punctured helmet and wanted to spread the message that helmets can save lives
“Why you should always wear a helmet. My son took a tumble today at The Remarkables. Fresh powder, lots of off piste stashes, some barely covered pointy rocky things – you get the picture, This was his helmet. There’s still a knife shaped piece of rock embedded in the helmet. You can see the point sticking through on the inside. He’s fine. And will ski again another day. But the medics reckoned this was one of the best adverts for a helmet they have seen. And so I’m posting it here to remind all you guys to wear yours. And if you dont have one, get one. It’s a small price to pay to live to ski another day.”
Please share this around with any of you buddies that still can’t be convinced to buy a bucket. They have come a long way over the years….please please put one on.
