Fort Carson soldier killed in snowboarding accident at Monarch

SALIDA, Colo. – A Fort Carson soldier was killed in a snowboarding accident at Monarch Ski Area Saturday, according to the Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies said Collin Zak, 23, was snowboarding on the advanced-level Mirage run just before noon when he hit a tree. He died on the scene.

Witnesses said Zak was wearing a helmet at the time of the collision.

Fort Carson officials said Zak, who had served in the military for five years, was a rifleman with the 1st Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division. He was from North Royalton, Ohio.
